River of Light by Ancient Infinity Orchestra Draws inspiration from spiritual jazz

“River of Light,” is the inaugural album from Ancient Infinity Orchestra, a vibrant 14-member jazz ensemble hailing from Leeds. At its helm is the accomplished double-bassist and composer, Ozzy Moysey, who guides the ensemble through a journey of communal, elevating, and meditative spiritual jazz.

Nestled in the creatively charged city of Leeds in Northern England, Ancient Infinity Orchestra finds its roots in one of the most innovative and community-centric jazz scenes in the UK. The ensemble, featuring saxophonist Matt Cliffe among its rotating members, boasts a diverse lineup that includes drums, two bassists, keyboards, harp, violin, cello, two tenors, alto, oboe, flute, and percussion.

Their debut on Gondwana Records, “River of Light,” draws inspiration from the deep wells of spiritual jazz, paying homage to iconic figures such as Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, and John Coltrane. The track “Pharoah Sings” explicitly references these influences while infusing a distinctive Northern sensibility reminiscent of the music produced by Matthew Halsall and Alabaster de Plume. With a melodic, warm, and sincere tone, the album boldly wears its heart on its sleeve.

Beyond its musical prowess, “River of Light” embodies a sense of communal spirit among friends. It serves as a profound celebration of togetherness and the shared joy of creating music. Ozzy Moysey, drawing on philosophy and nature, instills a focus on generosity and the beauty of sharing meaningful experiences with both fellow musicians and the audience.

The album’s recording process unfolded over three days, where the ensemble was joined by a choir of over a dozen friends from Brighton, UK. This collaboration added an additional layer of joy to the already beautiful music. The recording sessions were more than a mere technical process; they became a communal experience. Members cooked for each other, shared moments, and reveled in the collective spirit of the occasion.

Ozzy Moysey recounts the experience: “It was a joyous three days of recording together with the Leeds-based band of 14, combined with a similar-sized choir of friends from Brighton joining us. Seeing them meet for the first time and witnessing their incredible dedication and passion for music together, there was such a wholesome atmosphere that was so fun to be a part of.”

The album unfolds with the welcoming notes of “Greeting,” a tune often used to kick off live performances. “Rejoicing” becomes a musical playground, built on a repetitive composition that allows each member to contribute freely. “Niyama” delves into personal growth, symbolizing distractions and destructive behaviors through dark and stormy sections, ultimately progressing towards positive transformation.

Other highlights include “Michael & Zelah,” a heartfelt composition dedicated to the union of two close friends, and “Equanimity,” a tune inspired by the philosophy of balance and composure. The album concludes with “Pharaoh Sings,” a broad dedication to the joys of music, art, dance, and creativity, paying homage to influential figures such as Pharoah Sanders, John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane (Turiya), and Albert Ayler.

In essence, “River of Light” stands as a magical debut from Ancient Infinity Orchestra, inviting listeners to partake in the band’s celebration of togetherness and the profound connection between music and collective joy.
